Mrs. Ann Schuler

    Meet The Counselor

Welcome back to another school year! My name is Ann Schuler.  This is my 33th year as the counselor at Marrington Elementary School.  Since many of you never had a counselor in elementary school, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself and what an elementary school counselor actually does.

I was raised as a military child.  My father was a Marine, so I moved around my entire childhood.  I have experienced life as a military child, wife, sister, and mother.  These experiences created a special love and understanding of what it is to be part of a military family and all the sacrifices that each individual must make. As a result, I feel so blessed to be a counselor in a school filled with so many “military kids” in addition to all the other wonderful children! At Marrington Elementary School, each child in grades K-5 has classroom guidance on a weekly basis.  During this time, I teach students skills that are designed to support Academic State Standards and are aligned with ASCA National Standards and address Academic, Career, and Personal/Social Domains.  We cover topics such as Study Skills, Individual Differences, Safety, Decision Making, Manners, Friendship, Communication, and Careers.  I use a variety of techniques such as storytelling, original songs, puppets, and videos to demonstrate specific strategies to help students achieve academic and personal success. A unique feature of classroom guidance at MNE is that students learn to say a few words in a variety of languages.  Learning a new language makes children feel special.  It also creates an excitement of learning something new and unique, as well as fostering an appreciation of different cultures   Another focus of the school counseling program is familiarizing the students with Habits of Highly Effective People, from the Book, “The Leader In Me,” by Stephen R. Covey!  Each of the seven habits can be applied to every aspect of a student’s life. Additionally the school counseling program sponsors a Monthly Mini Career Fairs for 5th grade students with an emphasis on careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

Our Character Education Program at Marrington is called, "Virtue of the Month."  This is a wonderful program that rewards Character Virtues that the students learn about in classroom guidance, such as Honesty, Perseverance, Respect, and Responsibility.  Teachers in grades 1-5 select the student in her class that they feel best exemplifies a particular virtue.  The student is then featured on the Virtue of the Month bulletin board and acknowledged during an awards program which is aired on our TV news show: Good Morning Marrington!

It is my honor to be your child’s school counselor.  I think of it as my mission in life.If I can be of assistance to you in any way, remember, I am only a phone call or email away.  In the words of the old Michael Jackson song:  “You Are NOT Alone” at Marrington Elementary School.

In compliance with the No Child Left Behind law, I am listing my degrees, certifications and awards received.
